Symbolic of a sky father
Ranginui is the husband of Papatūānuku and father of all of the Māori atua. He is personified as the atmosphere, space and the cosmos, naming him variously Rangi (heavens), Ranginui (great heavens), Rangiroa (expansive heavens), or Te Ranginui-e-tū-nei (the great-standing heavens).
The pattern used inside his korowai is Poutama (stairway to the heavens) more commonly found on tukutuku panels in a wharenui. Poutama has significant spiritual and educational meanings.
